11 Degree Run Makes a Dog Happy

OK, so I needed to do a 5K yesterday and I originally predicted I would be running it on the treadmill since the temps were so low. But for some odd reason, with the temps reading 11 degress with a -11 real feel, I was dreading the indoor run. Thus, I decided to layer up the clothing and give it a go outdoors.

Take a look at the pic below. Can you guess who's the most excited party for the run? Harley is at least 12 inches off the ground and that was just the beginning of his jumps and bounding around when he saw me all decked out in my running gear.

So off we went. It was a beautiful run breaking tracks into the fresh snow. Turning onto the main road where I was doing the bulk of my 5K, there was at most tracks from two cars leaving an easy trail for me to step in for traction. Overall, the run was fabulous. A little cold on the lungs and the tummy. My two layers of Under Armour kept creeping up and my very top, 3rd layer, just wan't 100% chill proof. I had a streak of red across my tummy where the cold air creeped in when the UA crawled. I think I'm going to have to try another brand of cold weather tops to wear so I don't have to deal with the creeping. Any suggestions? I have a couple of adidas ones, I could layer, but I don't think the two together would be as warm as one Under Armour. I may need to shop for some heavier Adidas or Nike winter tops unless anybody has a better suggestion.

McRib picked us up and we were off to shower and get ready for a 3 hour spin at the Y. I met 6 of my cycling friends for some saddle time and we had a great time listening to music, spinning at our own pace and resistence and planning out the details of our RAGBRAI 2009 adventure.

Today's workout: 3 mile run. I hope everyone had a great weekend and RUN ON!

Good job on the run. Its almost impossible to get the right combination of clothes in weather like it has been.

I had creeping issues as well... but if I know i'm going to wear something overtop, I just tuck in the first layer. Not overly sexy i know... lol, but at least it keeps me warmer! LOVE that picture. too cute.

How cute!!! I have had that same problem, so I just tuck my under layer in. And make sure I wear something on top of it so I don't look like a total Granny on my run :)

DUH! I never thought about tucking. BOOYAH! Thanks for that tip! :D

What a great photo! He looks so excited to go for a run. Nice job getting out there on that cold day.

I always have the creeping issue...but it is probably because I have a big muffin top.

Great to see how psyched the dog is!

Damn, the snow looks good to run in. Take care not to slip!

Your dog is so cute. We have 2 black labs and they are so much fun. Great job on the run.

Awww, he looks so excited! Must be great company on the road.

I hope you find the right combination of clothes to keep the chill out - I ALWAYS have red skin after a cold run. :(

I have both UA and Nike Pro winter gear. The Nike stuff is MUCH more comfortable than Under Armour. I never had too much of a problem with creeping, but the Nike stuff stands out because it's softer. I get really itchy if I wear UA Heat Gear as the base layer.

I get that SAME red streak across the belly! BUT, my clothes don't creep up at all, explain that??!!!

What a good buddy, how excited is he!?! I always look for cold weather gear that is made for tall women, not always easy BUT if you can find it (any kind) get it as a base layer, even if it's a sleeveless top, keeps the creepy top down.

Wow that's 11F? that's cold!!!!
11c and the snow would melt!
It's just warming up to about 6c here now and my 3 layers are too warm, ( wasn't in winter layers like yours!)... it's a struggle to just go out in one top and compression gear tho! feels cold for that!

Loved reading your post. I ran the trails yesterday in 14 deg snowy weather with my black lab-he was unfazed, I was feeling the cold! I run with one UA shirt under a NorthFace light jacket - works for me.

I am still expirementing with layering in the cold weather. I do have a couple UA shirts and never had a problem with them creeping up. Maybe the mens stuff is a little different than the womens?

Hi Nikemom, sorry i giggled when i read about the creeping!!! I thought perhaps i was the only person it ever happened to!!!! Now i know i am not!!!

So tucking seems the way to go!!! When your going for warmth who cares about sexiness?????

Well i do but still!!!!

HAPPY MONDAY and stay warm!!!

That is the coolest picture EVER! :) Good luck with the cold weather. I know what the creeping up issue is and I only wear two layers.

That looks like a very familiar site at our house too when we say the word "walk".

Good for you braving the cold-I wimped out and ran indoors.

3 hours on the bike? You are a beast! I haven't been on a bike that long since 2006.

My Dog Frito jumps up high when he is excited to run too--I call it the ba-boing! cause he jumps off all 4 feet at once and wiggles his tail.

no help here on the cold gear. But running in the snow sounds like fun. at least once.

Nike has some awesome cold weather gear in their Pro line. And I love the picture of the pup! Vaughn (my dog) always gets super excited when I pull my running shoes out of the closet. They are so smart!

That is just an awesome picture of ONE. HAPPY. DOG! I have a Champion turtle neck that I've worn skiing and it didn't ride up. It's a similar weight as my UA (and cost about 1/2 as much at Target)

I wish I had a cool running buddy like that.

Your dog is adorable! I can't wait for my next apartment (I will NOT move in unless it is dog-friendly... I NEED a pet!)
